Beauty Encounters, Volume 03.

Who doesn’t love trying new beauty products?! Ulta has become a little like Target to me, where you go in for one thing and come out with ten. Harrison has been known to not even allow me to go into Target because it was so bad at one point! They recently built an all new, state-of-the-art Ulta in our local strip mall and it has been dangerous. That was what actually fueled the start to this new series!

This week’s Beauty Encounters features Urban Decay Naked Illuminated Shimmering Powder, Pixi Glow Tonic, and Mario Badescu Enzyme Cleansing Gel. Have you heard of any of these products? Let’s see what I thought in this beauty review!

Mario Badescu Enzyme Cleansing Gel

I’m a little bit of a cult Mario Badescu fan at this point. Remember this post where I talked all about their acne products? I really love their price-point, sleek packaging, and product overall. This cleansing gel was no different. First off, lets talk about the smell. It smells and feels ah-maz-ing! My skin became a little irritated after first use, but that’s just because it was bringing all of the dirt under my skin to surface. After about week 4 I can definitely see a difference!

Disclaimer: I went out of town last weekend and forgot to pack this with me. That means that I did not wash my face with it for four days, and afterwards I could definitely tell. I guess that’s a good thing, right?!

Urban Decay Naked Illuminated Shimmering Powder in Aura

I wasn’t joking when I said that Ulta was my new shopping black hole. I had zero intentions of picking this up during my latest run. ZERO. But hey, there it was… just calling my name. Overall, I really like this product. It has such a pretty shimmer to it, it’s remarkable. But, the only thing I will say is that it’s a little pricey. I’m interested to see how long it lasts. That would be my telling point whether or not I’ll purchase again.

Pixi Glow Tonic (c/o)

I mentioned in my last Pixi Beauty review that I was dying to get my hands on the cult favorite, Glow Tonic. Spoiler alert: it really lives up to its reputation!  I usually find it hard to remember to use toner, but I make it a point with this one. This product is extremely watery, but once it’s evaporated it’s not noticeable on the skin at all. It definitely leaves a softer and smoother feeling on your skin! I’ve found that it layers really well under other products too. Because this is a pH dependent product, the order of it in your routine matters. You want to use it right after cleanser and before other exfoliates, serums, or moisturizers.

Pro-tip: don’t use cotton balls or sheets; they waste product. Simply apply it into the palm of your hands before spreading it across the face. That’s how you’ll get the best bang for your buck.

I’m researching lots of new products for the next post in our Beauty Encounters. Is there anything you want us to review? Let me know!

P.S. Aren’t those little planters the cutest things you’ve ever seen? We sell the set of 3 you see above at Magnolia Rifle, make sure to check it out! 😉

Braids & Kimonos

If there’s one thing I know for sure, it’s that kimonos aren’t going anywhere in my closet. They are everything! Easy to throw on, super trendy, and available in just about any color, pattern, texture that you could think of! What’s not to love?

This kimono is from my boutique, Magnolia Rifle. I love it’s deep red color and the length!

And this clutch, isn’t it gorgeous?! Seriously goes with anything!

Alright, last up let’s talk about braids. I’ve never been good at them. The only thing I could really do was this go-to style in college. My girl Andrea really did it up with these dutch braids. I didn’t even know my hair was long enough to do them, let alone it look this good! Thanks Andrea!

What combos are you loving lately? Drop me a line in the comments and let me know!

Blackberry Bourbon Lemonade

I think it’s pretty obvious that Lights Camera Catwalk has always been a fashion and lifestyle blog dedicated to millennial women. You all crave recipes, skincare and beauty advice that is simple and straightforward. Well alcohol and cocktails sometimes aren’t! But after some searching I’ve found the perfect hack to figure it all out — specifically bourbon, a spirit that I’ve strayed away from until now.

Let’s cut to the chase: My man LOVES whiskey. Admittedly, I do not. Whenever we’re out together I can never seem to order the right cocktail. Just last night, we were having date night at a fancy restaurant downtown and he ordered a blackberry bourbon lemonade. Oh. My. God. It was the best thing I’d ever tasted! I simply HAD to recreate it, but I couldn’t find the right recipe anywhere. So I made my own using Whiskey5.com.

I have no idea where to start when looking for a Bourbon that I (and he) might like, but this website makes it so easy! I just entered in my flavor profile (sweet for me, spicy for him) and it gave me an expert suggestion! As I got sweet, that meant I should look for delicate whiskeys that offer up a surprisingly smooth creaminess and notes of fresh fruits and dried apricots. Harrison got spicy, which meant he was in store for a vibrant flavor journey, filled with fruitful highlights, hints of vanilla and peppery spices.

How To Find Your Flavor Profile

  • Select the two flavors that best suit your taste and use the sliders to set the intensity of each flavor. Also make sure to use the toggles after you make your flavor selections to rank how much of one flavor you are looking for in a whiskey! Flavors range from smooth, spicy, bold, to sweet or smoky.
  • Hit “Get Results” and find out your flavor!

So here it is, my Blackberry Bourbon Lemonade recipe with Bulleit Bourbon’s Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey! Serves 2 4 oz Bulleit Bourbon 1/4 cup fresh blackberries (now in season, eastern shore!) 1/3 cup sparkling lemonade 1 lemon 2 oz simple syrup Handful of mint Muddle the blackberries, mint and slices of lemon in a bowl. Once they’ve made a sort of paste, add the simple syrup. Pour the mixture into a shaker with some ice, the bourbon and the lemonade. Shake well and pour over ice. Garnish with mint!

I will no longer be afraid of trying bourbon. I now will be making this blackberry bourbon lemonade all the time, as well as maybe this Bourbon Mule that I shared last year. So delish! What’s your flavor profile? Make sure to check out the other cocktails located in our recipe archives while you’re at it!
