I’ve learned a thing or two over the years of getting dressed as a “blogger,” and one is that a plaid button down is a staple that should be in everyone’s closet. (Even the men’s!) I also realized that I typically tend to throw on a plaid button down with jeans and slip-ons. Changing the pattern, today it’s time to talk about how to dress up a casual plaid button down.
I sacrificed quality for price when I went for this plaid top last Fall. I got quite a lot of wear out of it, but it shrunk over time from the washing machine. When this Fall rolled around I knew I needed to bite the bullet and go for a new, nicer version of my favorite plaid button down. Say hello to this black and white number from Rails! Seriously so soft and under $150! I know, who needs to drop that much on a plaid shirt? But, I learned my lesson and realized how much wear I got out of it last year. It can be easily dressed up or down, and is a great layering piece for the Winter months.
Add A Pop Of Color With Lipstick.
Since plaid is a busy pattern, I tend not to overdo it with accessories. One accessory that is always a good idea is red lipstick! I always believe that you look better with a bright lip. My favorite is NARS Jungle Red or YSL’s Le Rouge. The first option is matte, where as YSL’s has a very satin finish. If you’re looking for a drugstore version (we’re pro at comparing drugstore and high-end beauty products, remember Emilie talking about it?!) I would recommend Revlon’s Really Red.
Swap your jeans out for a pair of black skinnies.
I know, I almost always go for the jeans, too. I’m sure you all have picked up on the fact that I’m not much of a dress-girl anymore. (I used to be, but struggle to find ones that fit and I feel confident in them now that I’ve gained some weight.) In order to dress up your plaid button down, opt for black – or even white, if you’re so daring – skinnies. The skinny cut shows off the shoe selection, and black pants in general just look more put together than denim.
Wear thick, stacked heeled booties.
Booties are an absolute must in the Fall and Winter months. I have flat pairs, fringe pairs, and I am constantly on the lookout for new, unique ones to add to my growing collection. You might remember me talking about these when I found my new off-the-shoulder top… They’re a dupe for the Jeffrey Campbell version that is $195 – such a steal! The silver accents draw your attention to your booties, and the unique cuts down the ankles are truly one-of-a-kind.
Finish the look with a statement clutch.
Don’t forget the bag! I’m a crossbody-bag girl tried and true, but an elevated outfit calls for more. I love the message this bag conveys, and the fun tassel on the zipper! If you’re a pattern mixer, this is also a great opportunity to add a little edge with a patterned clutch – like this leopard one, or this black and white one.
So what do you think, did you learn how to elevate your basic plaid button down? I hope so! You also got to see a little peek into Lt Grey’s office makeover – you can see the before photos here. Our big ribbon cutting and launch party was last week so I’m looking forward to sharing a full tour soooon! Happy Monday, friends!
